Evaluation Questions

Evaluation: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Throughout my research I have challenged and mainly used media conventions. Some of the main media conventions I have used are having the main image is one of the actors face close up. I have also challenged this convention by using a close up and not a mid shot. I think that by looking at such film magazines as Total Film and Empire I have been able to focus on what a successful magazine company can produce and the techniques they have used to do this. My film poster is also based on successful film posters with the same genre as our trailer. My main inspiration for creating my film poster was The Descent. I have used a similar layout with my images but edited them in a different way to suit our trailer. I think the effect of this is that out trailer definitely appeals to our target audience because of the way we have edited the poster.

Evaluation: How effective is the contribution of your main product and ancillary texts?
My ancillary texts and my trailer all come together as one promotional package and are easily recognisable in the way we have structured the layout and images. We have used images that are clearly from the trailer and all tie in with the storyline within our poster and magazine. The editing in the trailer, the poster and the magazine show that they are all advertising around the same movie. I have edited my poster and magazine similarly by using the same sort of colours and images, by doing this it makes my work look more professional and recognisible as a package. This is following the main media conventions of magazines, trailers and posters. We have looked at Shutter Island for main inspiration for producing a promotional package as all of the posters and magazine covers we have seen to do with Shutter Island all have a similar conventions of layout and colours. Because we also have a similar psychological theme running through our trailer we can use some of these conventions effectively.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
We used a range of media technologies such as Photoshop CS5, Movie Maker, Paint, Final Cut Pro and also other computer software’s like Prezi.  All of these things have aided us in the processes of making our final trailer, final poster and final magazine cover. By using a range of technologies we have been able to create all sorts of effects for our audience. Some of these things are the eerie music that we can hear in the trailer using Garage band on the iMacs and also using Photoshop to create a similar effect but with colour and lighting. By using such new technologies we have been able to create more professional looks in our trailer for example by using many different camera angles with a high tech camera which allows the audience to see the prospective from different characters from a number of different ways. The magazine and the poster have been based on effects we created in the trailer. The colour themes we have used we selected on Photoshop using the colour pallet and they all tie in together.

Finished Magazine cover

Evaluation I have used main media conventions which I have researched from actual film magazines such as Total Film and Empire. The main convention I have used is using the masthead of the magazine is the main character in our trailer. The original image the mouth had a slight smile so to change it I used the liquify tool to drag the corner of the mouth down to take away the slight sense of humour from the actors face to create a much more sinister look. The name of my magazine came from looking at deleted scenes and you see the director with the clapperboard and they say something along the lines of 'marker..' and then you hear two beeps. I chose this name as it is film related asnd also quite an easy name to remember. The caption underneath the title allows you to know for definate that the magazine is a film magazine. I have used only a few different colours on my magazine cover, the red comes from the red buckle on the character in the images helmet. There are two sections of text that are coloured green, these both relate to the main story which is our trailer.
