Film Trailers by Filmtrailer.com
The main form of advertisement for a film is through trailers and teaser clips. This trailer would have been shown on television between adverts and in the cinema before the films starts. The trailer gives us, the audience, a short but deep look into the stroy line without giving away too much information. Only the most interesting parts are picked to be shown in the trailer as it encourages the audience to want to watch the full film. Each individual genre of film is portrayed differently by the selected shots used and the way they are edited together. Music is a large influence on the genre of film being advertised, it sets the over tone for the film. Shutter Island is a Phsycological Thriller that is edited with fast past flashing images that is combined with the rising sound of the music to create a tense phycological build up.
Print advertisment is a wider way to reach people outside of the home. Shutter island has a variety of posters which are used to advertise. Below are a few examples for Shutter Island.

Posters are placed all around so that the public are open to view them. Print advertisement is a cheaper way to advertise films then making and showing trailers on television and in cinemas. Posters are limited to the informaion they can deliver so usually the image is one that strongly relates to the storyline or sometimes the total opposite. Some posters have only one image to keep information limited to the consumer.

Another way to advertise the films release and/ or the build up to the film is through the internet. Whether  the film is advertised on review websites or on the Official website. Search engines such as google for example list the most popular sites viewed in order. (Shown Below)

Below is an image of the home page for the official websiteof Shutter Island. The page is interactive and feautres the trailer in the top right hand corner of the screen. The trailer runs automatically when the site loads.
At the bottom of the page there are links to quid you to different aspects of the insitutional information and oher links. This website works so well because it fits with the theme of the film there is nothing really bright and in your face it is all quite sinister and dark. This reaches other members of the audience from the internet
side of advertising and allows interaction. the audience has full control of what they can look at in different areas of Shutter Islands features.

Name Of Production Company

The name of a production company is one that needs to be remebered. So something that isnt to complicated and long but something that is going to be remembered easy by maybe a logo to accompany the title.

Our group had a long discussion about different names that we could use as a company name, we came up with different ways of having different bits all three of our names included. We came up with things that couldnt really be used professionally such 'SDS' which are our initials for our last names. A better name that we decided to be our actual name is 'DAWSTOP Productions'.

This is just a quick show for the ideas of our name. We have yet to come up with an actual style and themed look for our name. I think that we are going to have it in block colours so its easy to read and out there. Im not sure about if were going to have colour or just keep it black. Logo's for our company name are a maybe but we will think about logos when we figure out the style of 'DAWSTOP Productions'.

Mise-en-scene in Trailers

Different genre films have different mise-en-scene for example, a horror film may have a dark setting such as in a dark forrest or in an old house. Whereas a romantic film may have scenes on a beach as the sun sets to set the mood.
The trailer for the film Mothers Day is set in a modern house with a group of people of differnt ages. Things that we can see on screen are a pool table, drinks bottles and normal house furniture like sofas and a TV.

Editing in Trailers

Trailers are edited in differnt ways according to the gender of the film for example, action packed films will have each  sections edited together using quick cuts with fast paced sounds to go with them. It all adds up to create one picture.
Trust – Drama
Editing:
mixture of fading in + out shots used with a black tint
editing quickens when the music gets louder/faster
POV or extreme face close ups are usually the longest length shot to show more emotions

As If I Am Not There – Drama
Editing:
no dialogue only piano song
over shoulder and POV used a lot reflect on audience
extreme close ups rarely used but when used indicated struggle
The only diegetic sound is the very last sound when the  the doors slams

Conan the Barbarian - Action
Editing:
Starts off with dialogue from the film as if telling a story
quick cut editing with faded black in and out
editing pace relates to the pace of the music

Sound in Trailers

Music in trailers is important as it sets the tone and it also allows you to think about the genre of the film.
I watched a few film trailers with different genders that I had never seen before without the sound and estimated the sounds I thought i would hear.

The first trailer, Larry Crowne, would have the audience of older people because of the actors in the film but it could also appeal to a mid teen audience because it is related to college/ university. I labelled a comedy from comical actions such as him dancing outside the door, I would expect to hear him cheering and stomping about. Another part is when he is on the scooter and rides into the table I think the sound of the scooter engine and the crashing sound into the table would be heard. I also think that we would hear laughing and lots of dialogue. When I watched the trailer the second time with sound I found that I heard everything I had listed beforehand.

The second trailer I watched I wanted a different genre which would make it more difficult to think about what sounds I would hear. Mothers Day I would say is a horror film just from the look and the camera shots used. The sounds I would expect to hear in this trailer are low bass beating to represent a hear beat at an intense moment. A quiet soundtrack that would build up tension in the audience also crying, gun shots, rain, screaming and shouting. I thought of all these ideas from watching the actions on screen and also comparing it to other horror trailers I have watched. When I watched this trailer for the second time with sound I found that nearly all the things I listed I had heard on the trailer.

What would affect the type of sounds you hear?
Genre
Audience
Camera Shots
Tension
Narrative
Setting
Characters- accents-personality
Editing
What helps promote and market the trailer?
upbeat sounds
sounds and transitions
Theme tune- distinctive
ring tones
catch phrases
soundtrack
Music artists

As If I Am NotThere

This is a first short analysis or a film trailer which is a similar sort of genre to the film trailer that we hope to produce which a psychological drama. We will base our trailer around the emotions in which the characters endorce and connect the audience with actors in an emotional bond. The way in which we shall do this is by only showing a variety of different camera angles of a few characters but try not to give to much of the story away. We will use such techniques found in the trailer below like close ups ad extreme close ups of actors faces maybe when in distress or traumatised. Different emotions can be edited for more effect for example, a woman smiling and turning around can be slowed down to show a happy time in life which will make the shot far more effective.

Click below to view the Trailer

The sounds used in this trailer are extremely effective and go hand in hand with the genre of the film and the characters being portrayed. There are no expected sounds but only a soft tune playing throughout the whole trailer. The only diegetic sound heard is the last anf final sound to be heard which is the door slamming shut which signifies the end of the trailer. I think that this is anoutstanding way to end a trailer and would look for an opportunity when producing mine to use this sort of technique.
Summary found on IMDb:
A harsh dose of cinematic realism about a harsh time-the Bosnian War of the 1990s-Juanita Wilson's drama is taken from true stories revealed during the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague. Samira is a modern schoolteacher in Sarajevo who takes a job in a small country village just as the war is beginning to ramp up. When Serbian soldiers overrun the village, shoot the men and keep the women as laborers (the older ones) and sex objects (the younger ones), Samira is subjected to the basest form of treatment imaginable.
