Full Film Analysis with Audience Reaction

Notes on whole film analysis of shutter island. Covering the four key areas mise-en-scene, editing, sound and camera angles also we have done a secdtion on things which we could use in our film trailer.

Mise-en-sceneSet to time and place with expected things things such as approptiate equiptment visible. Outfits which identify patients and officers in the working place. Water dripping, matches have a significent meaning to the storyline. Overall the mise-en-scene is very in depth and intricate.

Editng
Flashbacks, reverse smoke movement shows time going back as he uncovers more and more of the story. Lighting and sound are fused together for extreme effects for example, when the music gets louder a white fade out creates more of an extreme effect - exiting that scene, Quick cuts are used between emotional scenes and more action packed scenes.

Sound
Slow music- deep sounds which sometimes interupt conversation.
Continuous build up at the beginning of the film whilst approaching Shutter Island.
Classical music is contrasted with the loudness of the stormy weather. The stormy weather relates to marshalls mood and the classical shows Dr. Cawleys relaxed mood.

Camera Angles
Close ups and exstreme close ups are used when characters are focusing on items such as door locks and other people. There is usually shot reverse shot between the two things. Panorama gives the large feel for the Island such as when the camera moves around the trees. Over the shoulder shots and two shots are often used during converstations. Close ups are used on the patients tattoos which could be symbollic of religion or like prioners tattoos.

Storylines/ key points
Lots of information is given at the beginning of the film.
Psychological messages and memories are shown through faded edites which makes you think about flashbacks. there are a few humorous points whether they are intentional or not.
Marshall often dreams about his 'wife' who seems to be controlling him. He doesnt want to let her go so this is why the dreams keep on happening.
